In a shocking act of violence, a shooting at an office building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening left a New York City police officer and three others dead. The gunman, identified as Shane D. Tamura, a 27-year-old resident of Las Vegas, succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the incident, according to police reports.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that surveillance footage captured Tamura exiting a black BMW parked on Park Avenue just before 6:30 PM, brandishing a high-powered M4 rifle. He entered the 44-story building located at 345 Park Avenue and immediately targeted a police officer.
“We received numerous 911 calls regarding an active shooter in the building shortly after,” Commissioner Tisch stated during a press briefing. The building houses offices for major companies, including Blackstone, the NFL, and KPMG.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams mentioned that it appears Tamura intended to assault the NFL offices but mistakenly used the incorrect elevator.
The Victims
The heroic officer, identified as Didarul Islam, 36, had served the NYPD for four years and was providing additional security on a paid detail at the time of the attack. Islam, who hailed from Bangladesh and leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young children, was commended by Mayor Adams for his bravery and commitment.
“He represented the essence of New York City in both spirit and service,” Adams remarked. “He was a protector, working to save lives.”
Three other individuals working in the building were also killed during this tragic event, with another person reported in critical condition. The identities of these victims are being withheld pending notification of their families.
Community Reaction
Expressing shared grief, Governor Kathy Hochul extended her condolences on social media, stating, “Tonight we mourn four New Yorkers, including one of New York’s Finest.” She added her appreciation for the first responders who faced imminent danger while saving lives.

Investigation Updates
Following the attack, investigators confirmed that Tamura’s vehicle was registered in his name, with officers discovering a rifle case, ammunition, and personal medication inside. Preliminary findings indicate that Tamura drove across the country to reach New York City, with a noted history of mental health issues.
As the scene unfolded, the area around the building was locked down, and police urged the public to steer clear of East 52nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. Commissioner Tisch clarified that the investigation suggests this was an isolated incident, with no ongoing threat to the public.
“This act of pure evil struck at the heart of our city,” said Patrick Hendry, President of the Police Benevolent Association. “We must find answers to this senseless tragedy.”
