A Journey from Tailoring to Farming
Jayne Jones never envisioned a life steeped in agriculture when she crossed paths with her husband Andrew. Her previous role in the women’s tailoring industry at Jaeger on Union Street, Plymouth, starkly contrasts with her current life on the farm near Launceston. “One doesn’t choose who to love,” Jayne reflects.
Today, she works side by side with Andrew on the farm, supported by their two sons, Harvey and Oscar. Andrew’s father, Roger, also plays an integral role in their day-to-day activities. “It’s in our blood,” he states as he prepares for milking.
A Day in the Life
The Jones family exemplifies a close-knit team, thriving on collaboration. Though their days are unpredictable, they consistently prioritize their responsibilities towards their livestock. “Meals are seldom shared together, as we eat when our tasks are complete,” Jayne explains, noting that the family atmosphere is always in motion.
Oscar, the younger son, adds, “Dinner plates are perpetually rotating; as one is served, another goes into the oven.” Livestock demands dictate their schedule, with their cows—fondly referred to as “the girls”—taking center stage. They are monitored around the clock via CCTV, ensuring their well-being.
Balancing Nature’s Challenges
Recognizing the unpredictability of weather conditions, the family vigorously tackles their work, especially during peak harvest times. “If that means beginning at 3 AM and resuming at 6 AM, we do what it takes,” shares Harvey, who returned to the farm post-university.
“It’s not an 8-5 job; in farming, you can never clock out—it’s a continuous effort,” he continues, appreciating the responsibility he undertakes. His younger brother Oscar emphasizes the rigorous standards involved in British farming, noting, “The documentation—covering health records and welfare standards—is demanding but crucial to our success.”

At 80 years old, Roger remains a pivotal force in the farm’s functioning, working six days a week. His unwavering work ethic commands admiration from both Harvey and Oscar. “He’s unstoppable, consistently contributing from dawn until dusk,” Harvey beams.
Oscar reflects, “It’s rare for three generations to collaborate, and it truly is an honor to share this experience.” Though Jayne never expected to find herself in this environment, her pride in the familial bond and shared efforts illuminates her narrative—a heartfelt transformation from romance to devotion.
