At Home Enters Bankruptcy Protection, Plans to Close 26 Stores
At Home, the popular home décor and furniture retailer with over 200 stores across the United States, has announced it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This decision comes as part of a broader restructuring strategy aimed at alleviating a staggering $2 billion in debt while simultaneously securing $200 million in new capital to support its transition.
Store Closures and Financial Challenges
According to court documents, 26 At Home locations nationwide are scheduled to close by the end of September 2025. This is part of an effort to stabilize the company’s financial standing, which has been severely impacted by escalating tariffs and other economic pressures. Under the terms of a forbearance agreement with its lenders, who now hold more than 95% of its debt, At Home is set to transfer ownership of the company to these creditors.
Brad Weston, CEO of At Home, stated:
“We are navigating an increasingly dynamic trade environment impacted by tariffs. Our restructuring efforts are crucial to enhancing our competitive edge and ensuring long-term resilience.”
Historical Background
Initially founded as Garden Ridge Pottery in 1979 in Schertz, Texas, At Home has gradually expanded its footprint to 260 locations across 40 states. The retailer specializes in a wide range of home goods, from rugs and furniture to bedding and kitchenware. However, recent Chapter 11 filings reveal that the company has faced significant financial difficulties, having already closed six stores within the past year.
Market Conditions and Consumer Trends
Market analysts suggest that the combination of inflationary pressures and tariffs has strained At Home’s revenue generation capabilities. Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, observed:
“Consumer demand for home furnishings is dwindling due to low confidence and a sluggish housing market. These conditions are unlikely to improve anytime soon.”
The bankruptcy filing has occurred against a backdrop of financial distress affecting other major retailers, with The Container Store and Big Lots also announcing similar moves in recent months.
