Tragic Accident on I-96 Claims Life of Detroit Teen
Authorities are investigating a deadly car accident that occurred early Tuesday morning on Interstate 96 in Brighton Township, located in Livingston County. The Michigan State Police reported that the incident took place around 9:30 AM near Kensington Road, specifically at Exit 151.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, a 19-year-old man from Detroit was behind the wheel of a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu and was allegedly traveling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Witnesses have shared that the driver abruptly swerved into the middle lane, colliding with another vehicle. This contact resulted in both vehicles losing control and subsequently striking a third vehicle. The impact was severe enough that the Malibu overturned, ultimately crashing into a construction traffic trailer set up in the area.
Casualties and Injuries
Tragically, the driver of the Malibu succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A second driver involved suffered only minor injuries, while two other passengers from the Malibu—a 19-year-old male from Detroit and a 19-year-old male from West Bloomfield—were present in the vehicle during the incident. Their condition remains uncertain as authorities continue to investigate the accident.
Michigan State Police suspect that excessive speed played a significant role in causing the crash. However, investigators have not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.

As a result of the collision, all westbound lanes of I-96 are currently closed, starting at Milford Road in Oakland County. Motorists are advised to take the following detour:
- Southbound on Milford Road / Exit 155B
- Westbound on Grand River
- Northbound on Kensington Road
